Vintage 'Wimberdar' Ladder Darner Egg - with replacement hook
A darning egg is a useful tool for repairing small holes in socks and jumpers, but this vintage 'Wimberdar' darning egg goes one step further and helps you fix ladders too!
The egg has a rounded surface on one side for classic darning, but flip it over and you'll notice a groove on the other side which together with the mini latch hook needle can be used to pull up ladders.
Sadly its original latch hook needle is missing (hence the reduced price!). Instead we'll include one of our own vintage latch hook needles which is almost identical to the original except for the wooden handle. Please be aware as this needle does not have a wooden handle it cannot be stored inside the egg when not in use.
Suitable for:
- darning socks, tights and other similar items.
- mending small holes and repairing ladders.
Dimensions:
- Length - 7cm
- Width (at widest point) - 4cm
Made in England - circa 1940's.
This egg features the 'Wimberdar' brand mark in red on one side and is smooth to the touch with a varnish finish.
This egg has been used previously and therefore has a bit of 'character' including the odd surface scratch or mark, so please don't expect to receive a pristine 'new' item.
History
History of the Darning Egg
This darning tool was an essential item in 19th and early 20th century household as self-reliant women often had to make and repair all their clothing. They were commonly made using wood as it was widely availiable and not too expensive.
They made it much easier to repair socks, particulary the toe and heel area. The smaller size and shape meant it could be placed inside socks without stretching the fabric too much.
